Friedrich

1- Lightning strikes flashing pixels up into the trees. The air is lit with sirring, whirring sounds. Amid the silent forrest on a clearing, wide and dry, stands a shadow, upright in the wind. And Friedrich lets his gaze trace moths that spin across the meadow. Bones of branches sticking up among the grasses. Friedrich’s feet draw moist stalks, that slip cool along his thighs as he moves along. 2-

I am Become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds

[This video] was filmed shortly after the [nuclear] bomb was created and he knew exponentially more powerful bombs would be invented. He lived through the second world war and witnessed Europe bombed over and over again. He had every reason to believe the next war, a nuclear war, was fast approaching and his creation would usher in the total annihilation of life on earth. This man literally felt he would be the cause of the annihilation of our species.

I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita; Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and, to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says, “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.

Almost Everything in Dr.Strangelove was True

A decade after the release of “Strangelove,” the Soviet Union began work on the Perimeter system — a network of sensors and computers that could allow junior military officials to launch missiles without oversight from the Soviet leadership. Perhaps nobody at the Kremlin had seen the film.

Completed in 1985, the system was known as the Dead Hand. Once it was activated, Perimeter would order the launch of long-range missiles at the United States if it detected nuclear detonations on Soviet soil and Soviet leaders couldn’t be reached. Like the Doomsday Machine in “Strangelove,” Perimeter was kept secret from the United States; its existence was not revealed until years after the Cold War ended. […]

This is absolute madness, Ambassador,” President Merkin Muffley says in the film, after being told about the Soviets’ automated retaliatory system. “Why should you build such a thing?” Fifty years later, that question remains unanswered, and “Strangelove” seems all the more brilliant, bleak, and terrifyingly on the mark.

52-hertz whale

The 52-hertz whale is an individual of unidentified whale species, which has been regularly detected in many locations since the 1980s, calling at the very unusual frequency of 52 Hz. This pitch is a much higher frequency than that of the Blue Whale (15-20Hz) or Fin Whale (20Hz), whose migration patterns it is most similar to. It appears to be the only individual with this call, and has hence been described as the world’s loneliest whale.

Stadtstraße. Windstille. Kaugummiflecken.

Stadtstraße. Windstille. Kaugummiflecken.

„Weißt du, was komisch ist?“ — „Ja.“

Ein Blumenladen an einer Straßenecke. Weiß gestrichene Fenster, in Holz gerahmt.
